That which we can accomplish through our own efforts will pale in comparison to what we will accomplish when we invite Divinity into our goals and aspirations.
– John Gualtieri
There are many popular sayings in our culture which make me chuckle. Just Do It (from the older Nike commercials) is one of them. It implies that we are in control – that we can “make” just about anything happen if we Just Do It.
Throughout this collection of essays, I have emphasized that I make no apologies for my faith in a Beneficent Creator. And, while it is true that most people in our culture do believe in God, my experience has been that most of us, seldom if ever, invite God into our goals and aspirations. The choice to approach those things to which we aspire, without Divinity taking the proverbial wheel on our behalf, is a sad thing indeed. I am in no way implying that God will do anything on our behalf without us doing some heavy lifting. But what I do believe is that when we invite Divinity into the equation, our goals are literally “blessed,” and when that blessing is given, the gates of hell cannot prevail against that which we must accomplish.
I have come to believe that we are in control of nothing – Not one thing, except our choices (i.e., our behavior), and our thoughts. Beyond those things, nothing happens without a sovereign God allowing it to happen or causing it to happen.
I have also learned to petition my Creator to bless my goals, and I implore Him to remove the desire for any goal if it is not within the context of His Will for my life. Whenever I have allowed my own best thinking and my feelings to rule my choices, the outcome has not been very good, and oftentimes devastating! And what I have come to embrace is that if a goal is not right for me, God always has something else in mind, which is always for my highest and best good – Thy Will, not mine, be done…
Lastly, it is vitally important to remind ourselves continually about what I have stated herein – that we control nothing but our behavior and our thoughts. In so doing, we will paradoxically unleash empowerment in our lives, making “Just doing it” laughable!
Take your goals and dreams to The Altar – Just do it!
